The widows of India have an extremely difficult existence. There is no social security, pensions, savings, or other means of support for them. If there are no family members willing and able to house and support these women, they are often reduced to the deepest and dreariest levels of poverty, existing by begging and scrounging for food. Old widows in India often are shunned and forgotten.
Young widows – and there are many – have the burden of trying to earn enough while caring for their small children. They are vulnerable to being cheated in payment for work and in being sexually harassed. Open Arms India helps widows by providing them with training in job skills, blankets, clothing, shelter, and with goats for income production.
Many widows do not have a place to stay or have very meagre accommodations. We see every challenge as an opportunity, and provide housing, sanitation, food and shelter for this vulnerable section of society.
